In Chapters 23 and 24 of The People of the Mist, H. Rider Haggard delivers one of the most dramatic and unforgettable sequences in the entire novel — a clash of ritual, terror, courage, and political upheaval inside the great temple of the Snake.

Leonard, Juanna, Otter, and their companions are forced to participate in a nightmarish coronation ceremony deep within the sacred amphitheater. Juanna and Otter, elevated as the “Mother” and “Child” gods, are placed high upon the colossal idol overlooking a vast crowd. Below them, the priests prepare human sacrifices — including the terrified king Olfan — while the monstrous “Snake,” a gigantic ancient crocodile, waits in the seething waters beneath the idol.

Juanna alone understands the language of the People of the Mist, and she quickly realizes that the priests intend to kill Leonard, Francisco, the Settlement men, and Olfan. What follows is one of Haggard’s most gripping scenes: Juanna’s brilliant, fearless speech to the people, Leonard’s deadly rifle shots from the idol’s hand, and the sudden collapse of Nam’s authority.

Chapter 24 continues the tension as the group escapes the temple through the hidden passage, reunites with Olfan’s soldiers, and returns to the palace. The night ends with uneasy alliances, new dangers, and hints of the rubies they still seek — but also the growing suspicion that Nam, the high priest, will not accept defeat quietly.

⭐ CHAPTER 23 — “How Juanna Conquered Nam”
