COW DOCTOR and JEALOUSY GUNSMOKE
⭐ 1001 STORIES FROM THE OLD WEST
SHOW NOTES — GUNSMOKE DOUBLE FEATURE
"COW DOCTOR" & "JEALOUSY"
This week, we're bringing you a Gunsmoke double feature — two standout episodes that showcase the grit, humor, and human drama that made the series a legend of radio's golden age. Each story stands on its own, but together they paint a vivid picture of frontier life in Dodge City, where pride, rumor, and desperation can turn an ordinary day into a powder keg.
⭐ COW DOCTOR
When a frightened boy named Jerry Pitcher arrives in Dodge City begging for help, Doc Adams and Matt Dillon ride out to the Pitcher farm expecting a medical emergency. What they find instead is a deception: Jerry's father, Ben Pitcher, isn't sick at all. He simply tricked his son into fetching Doc so he could treat his cow, which is suffering from colic.
While Doc is away doctoring livestock, a human patient back in Dodge City dies — a tragedy that would not have happened had Doc been in town. The news sends Doc into a rare fury, and he strikes Ben Pitcher in anger. Pitcher retaliates by pulling a knife and stabbing Doc, leaving Matt Dillon to step in, stitch Doc up, and restore order before the situation spirals further out of control.
A powerful story about misplaced priorities, frontier ethics, and the explosive consequences of pride on the prairie.
⭐ JEALOUSY
(Season 2 Finale)
Matt Dillon's old friend Cam Durbin arrives in Dodge City to set up a faro table at the Long Branch Saloon, accompanied by his wife Tilda. But trouble follows close behind in the form of Lonnie Pike, a crooked gambler with a long‑standing grudge against Matt.
Instead of confronting the Marshal directly, Pike chooses a more poisonous route: he begins whispering lies into Cam's ear, claiming that Matt and Tilda are having an affair. The rumor spreads quickly, threatening Cam and Matt's long friendship and pushing Cam toward violence.
As tensions rise inside the Long Branch, Matt must untangle Pike's deception, confront Cam's wounded pride, and restore the truth before jealousy turns deadly.
A tense, character‑driven finale exploring trust, betrayal, and the fragile nature of reputation on the frontier.
