ANNE OF THE ISLAND (CHAP 3): GREETING AND FAREWELL LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY

This week, in Chapter 3: "Greeting and Farewell" of Anne of the Island, listeners will join Anne Shirley as she stands on the threshold of a grand adventure, departing the cherished comfort of Green Gables for the bustling, unknown world of Kingsport and Redmond College. The episode opens with a dim and dreary dawn, setting the scene for tearful goodbyes to her beloved home, family, and friends, including a hilariously stubborn Davey and a seemingly stoic Marilla. 

As Anne embarks on her journey, she faces the initial bewilderment of finding herself alone amidst strangers in the bright glare of Kingsport station. Her homesickness is palpable, a swamping wave of loneliness, until the welcome sight of a familiar face brings much-needed comfort. 

This chapter beautifully explores the very essence of growing up and forging one's path, navigating new friendships and challenges.  For many women like Anne, pursuing a university education off Prince Edward Island was a significant step, as PEI itself did not have women university graduates until 1941, and its only university at the time, St. Dunston's, did not accept women for its first 84 years. Join us as Anne bids adieu to her beloved Prince Edward Island and bravely embraces the thrilling, uncertain promise of tomorrow.
