Show Notes – The Problem of Cell 13, Part 1 (Jacques Futrelle)

In this episode: We begin one of the most celebrated locked‑room mysteries ever written—Jacques Futrelle’s The Problem of Cell 13, featuring the brilliant “Thinking Machine” himself, Professor Augustus S.F.X. Van Dusen. Futrelle’s creation was designed to rival Holmes in pure deductive power, and in this story he puts that reputation on the line in a challenge that borders on the impossible.

Part 1 sets the stage:

• A spirited debate erupts over whether the human mind, properly applied, can overcome any obstacle.

• Van Dusen, ever confident, accepts a wager that would terrify any ordinary man—escape from a maximum‑security prison cell with no tools, no accomplices, and no advantages… within one week.

• We meet the skeptical Dr. Prescott, the amused newspaper man Hatch, and the prison officials who are certain the professor has finally overestimated himself.

• The challenge is agreed upon, the rules are set, and Van Dusen is escorted into the infamous Cell 13—bare, cold, isolated, and supposedly escape‑proof.

This opening chapter is all atmosphere, tension, and intellectual bravado. Futrelle builds the puzzle piece by piece, inviting listeners to wonder: How can a man escape a cell without ever touching the lock? Part 1 ends with Van Dusen alone in the darkness… already thinking.

About the Author

Jacques Futrelle (1875–1912) was a journalist, editor, and mystery writer whose “Thinking Machine” stories became instant favorites among puzzle‑lovers. His life ended tragically aboard the Titanic, but his stories—especially The Problem of Cell 13—remain enduring classics of early detective fiction.
