Chapter 2 Summary: In Chapter 2, Professor Albert Wilmarth becomes increasingly entangled in the strange events unfolding in rural Vermont. After receiving Henry Akeley’s first alarming letter, Wilmarth begins corresponding with him more frequently — and the tone of Akeley’s messages grows darker with each exchange.

Akeley describes nighttime visitations, eerie voices whispering outside his farmhouse, and strange tracks appearing around his property. He sends Wilmarth photographs, phonograph recordings, and detailed accounts of the creatures he believes are stalking him — the legendary Mi-Go, beings said to inhabit the remote hills and caves of the region.

Wilmarth, still skeptical but deeply unsettled, tries to reconcile Akeley’s claims with rational explanations. Yet the evidence Akeley provides is too specific, too vivid, and too consistent to ignore. The professor begins to sense that Akeley is not merely frightened — he is being systematically terrorized, isolated, and watched.

Chapter 2 builds the tension masterfully:

• Akeley’s letters shift from curiosity to desperation

• Strange sounds and movements surround his home

• The Mi-Go seem to be closing in

• Wilmarth realizes he may be dealing with something far beyond folklore
