SHOW NOTES — When Hemingway Saved the Paris Ritz
Some stories stay with you. Not because they’re the biggest or the boldest, but because they capture a moment — a feeling — that reminds us why we started telling stories in the first place. This is one of those.
Back in the early days of 1001 Stories for the Road, long before the network grew into what it is today, we shared a tale that listeners never forgot: the day Ernest Hemingway — journalist, adventurer, romantic, and occasional loose cannon — decided he was going to “liberate” the Paris Ritz before the Nazis could destroy it.
It was August 1944. Paris was trembling on the edge of freedom. The German army was retreating, the Allies were advancing, and Papa Hemingway, armed with a press pass and a stubborn streak the size of Montana, swapped credentials with a fellow correspondent and headed toward the city with a small band of Maquis fighters. Not for glory. Not for headlines. But to save a hotel — his hotel — the Ritz, where he had spent long nights drinking with friends like Cole Porter, Gary Cooper, and a rotating cast of pre‑war legends.
Along the way, he and his ragtag group were famously chewed out by General George Patton himself, who made it clear that Hemingway would not be the first man into Paris. But Papa being Papa… he found a way to get there anyway.
What follows is one of my all‑time favorite stories we’ve ever told — sentimental, funny, reckless, and somehow deeply heroic. It’s a portrait of Hemingway at his best: flawed, fearless, and fiercely loyal to the places and people he loved.
Today, we bring that story home to 1001 Heroes, where it belongs.
