Chapters 3 & 4

1001 Stories For The Road
In Chapters 3 and 4 of Anne of Green Gables, Matthew Cuthbert arrives home with a surprise that Marilla Cuthbert most certainly wasn't expecting.
Anne Shirley.
Matthew and Marilla had arranged to adopt a boy who could help around Green Gables. Instead, Matthew returns with an imaginative, talkative, red-haired eleven-year-old girl who has already begun falling in love with Green Gables and dreaming that perhaps, at last, she has found a home.
Marilla is practical. A mistake has obviously been made, and mistakes must be corrected.
But Matthew has already discovered something Marilla hasn't yet admitted: there's something about Anne.
For Anne, the realization that she may be sent away is devastating. After a lifetime of uncertainty, she had allowed herself to believe, if only briefly, that Green Gables might finally belong to her and that she might belong to it.
Then comes morning.
Anne awakens in the little east gable room and, for a few precious moments, is captivated by the beauty outside her window. Her imagination comes alive again.
But reality soon returns.
Her future remains uncertain.
And quietly, almost without anyone noticing it happen, Anne Shirley has already begun changing Green Gables.
Matthew is firmly in her corner.
Marilla is determined to do what is sensible.
And Anne?
Anne is simply hoping someone will finally decide that she is worth keeping.
