⭐ CHAPTER XXI — THE FOLLY OF OTTER

In this chapter, the party reels from the shock of their sudden elevation into godhood — or at least, the appearance of it. Juanna (“The Shepherdess”) and Otter (“The Snake”) have successfully convinced the People of the Mist that they are divine beings returned from legend. The regiment’s worship, the prostrations, the chanting — all of it has worked exactly as Soa predicted.

But Soa herself is uneasy. She knows this is only the beginning. Entering the city as gods is one thing; remaining gods in a land ruled by superstition, ritual, and ruthless priests is another. Her warnings are sharp, even ominous — and Leonard begins to understand the danger they are in.

Juanna recounts the astonishing scene of their acceptance, and the group marvels at their luck. Yet Soa reminds them that Leonard and Francisco were not named gods, and that Otter’s impulsive nature could easily betray them. Her foreboding words cast a shadow over the triumph.

As they enter the city, the People of the Mist greet Juanna and Otter with overwhelming reverence. Litters are prepared, crowds prostrate themselves, and the pair are carried through a strange, ancient settlement — a place that hints at a forgotten civilization now reduced to ritual and fear.

Inside the king’s palace — now seized for the “gods” — the group is separated. Guards and priests stand watch over Juanna and Otter’s chambers, refusing entry even to Leonard until Juanna asserts her divine authority.

When they finally reach Otter, they find him furious and starving. Forced to sit all night on a throne while priests chant and burn incense, he is ready to explode. Leonard warns him to maintain the act — but Otter’s hunger soon leads to disaster.

Presented with a dish of raw vegetables and watercress — and a large ruby placed ceremonially at its center — Otter loses his temper. Mistaking the gem for an insult, he hurls it at the priest’s head. The ruby, which could have been the first of many, is lost.

The consequences are immediate. The priests declare the offering a sacrilege and vow that all sacred stones — rubies and sapphires — must be cast into a forbidden place from which none return. The man who brought the gem is doomed. And the treasure Leonard sought is suddenly out of reach.

Otter realizes his mistake too late. His folly has cost them dearly, and the group is left shaken. Then comes a final twist: Soa reveals that Nam, the high priest, is her father — a revelation that could destroy them all if he recognizes her.

⭐ CHAPTER XXII — THE TEMPLE OF JÂL

The next chapter deepens the tension. Leonard checks on the Settlement men, who are terrified of the priests and warriors watching them like predators. He reassures them, reminding them that their lives depend on maintaining the illusion of Juanna and Otter’s divinity.

As the day drags on, the mist thickens and the palace grows oppressive. Priests chant endlessly outside the curtains. Leonard ventures out and sees crowds gathering at the massive temple — clearly preparing for a major ceremony.

At last, Nam and a group of priests arrive to escort the gods to the temple. Juanna must be robed in a strange black garment with a mask and given symbolic flowers. Otter is adorned with a scarlet fringe and an ancient ivory serpent‑scepter.

The preparations are solemn, ritualistic, and unsettling. The priests treat Juanna and Otter with reverence bordering on terror. The ceremony ahead will reveal them to the entire tribe — a moment that could cement their power or expose their deception.

As the chapter closes, the gods are ready, the priests are waiting, and the temple looms in the mist — a place where the People of the Mist will gather to witness the rebirth of their ancient deities.

The danger is rising. The deception is deepening. And the stakes — for treasure, survival, and freedom — have never been higher.
