A COWBOY DETECTIVE – CHAPTER 15 (PART 1)
Charlie Siringo’s 1,000‑Mile Ride Into the Wild Bunch’s Shadow
⭐ BEFORE WE BEGIN — A FEW WILD WEST MYSTERIES TO SET THE STAGE
⭐ Who was “Peg‑Leg”?
Peg‑Leg was a real outlaw operating in the Indian Creek and Blue Mountains region of Utah — a tough, suspicious, gun‑packing rider who knew every hidden trail, every canyon, and every outlaw camp. He wasn’t a nickname borrowed from folklore; he was a flesh‑and‑blood criminal who stood in with the Wild Bunch and acted as a guide, informant, and sometimes enforcer. Siringo’s interactions with him were tense, dangerous, and invaluable — Peg‑Leg knew things no lawman could learn any other way.
⭐ Who was “Black Jack”?
“Black Jack” was Thomas “Black Jack” Ketchum, one of the most feared outlaws of the era — a violent train robber and killer whose reputation for bloodshed exceeded even some members of the Wild Bunch. He was not part of Butch Cassidy’s gang, but he operated in the same territories and left a trail of bodies behind him. Siringo’s mention of him is a reminder that the West wasn’t just populated by charming rogues — some were genuinely deadly.
⭐ What was that 3,000‑foot‑deep warm lake Siringo swam in?
Siringo describes a bottomless warm lake atop a round mountain near the Salt Lakes region of western New Mexico and eastern Arizona — almost certainly referring to Zuni Salt Lake, a volcanic maar crater lake sacred to the Zuni people. It is:
-
geologically ancient
-
extremely deep (modern measurements show ~100–200 feet, but legends claim thousands)
-
warm in winter due to geothermal activity
-
surrounded by salt flats used for harvesting salt
Siringo’s description matches the folklore perfectly — a mysterious warm crater lake high on a mountain, believed bottomless by locals.
⭐ COMING SOON: THE RAID AT ROBBERS ROOST
One of the most legendary outlaw hideouts in American history — Robbers Roost in Utah — was the fortress headquarters of Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch. Siringo’s Chapter 15 brings us right to its doorstep, and soon we’ll be releasing a full episode on THE RAID AT ROBBERS ROOST, where lawmen finally attempted to crack the Wild Bunch’s most secret sanctuary.
Stay tuned — this one’s going to be big.
⭐ EPISODE SUMMARY — CHAPTER 15 (PART 1)
A 1,000‑Mile Horseback Ride Into the Heart of Outlaw Country
In this first half of Chapter 15, Charlie Siringo begins one of the most grueling and dangerous assignments of his career: a 1,000‑mile horseback pursuit across Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico in search of Kid Curry, Bill Cruzan, and possibly Longbaugh (the Sundance Kid).
After a Union Pacific train holdup at Tipton, Wyoming, Siringo receives word that Kid Curry and a tall companion have been spotted south of Grand Junction, Colorado. With two tough roan horses and a pack full of supplies, he heads into some of the roughest country in the American West.
Along the way he encounters:
-
The Young brothers, notorious “bad men” of Paradox Valley
-
Bill G., outlaw manager of the Carlisle Cattle Ranch
-
Peg‑Leg and Kid Jackson, dangerous Indian Creek outlaws
-
Secret haystacks, hidden outlaw supply caches
-
Robbers Roost, the legendary Wild Bunch hideout
-
Mormon sheriffs quietly protecting outlaw friends
-
Secret trails, hidden boats, and escape routes known only to criminals
Siringo’s journey is a vivid portrait of the outlaw West — a place where sheriffs stood in with criminals, where ranchers hid hay for fugitives, and where the Wild Bunch moved like ghosts across hundreds of miles of canyon country.
His ride takes him through:
-
the Blue Mountains
-
Indian Creek
-
Monticello
-
the Henry Mountains
-
the Dirty Devil River
-
Cainsville
-
San Rafael Swell
-
and deep into outlaw territory where lawmen rarely dared to go
This chapter is a masterclass in frontier detective work — blending grit, patience, danger, and Siringo’s uncanny ability to win the trust of men who would kill him if they knew who he really was.
⭐ PART 2 COMING THIS SUNDAY AT NOON ET
In Part 2, Siringo pushes deeper into outlaw territory, crosses the Colorado River, enters the Navajo and Moqui nations, and finally reaches Alma, New Mexico — the Wild Bunch’s southern stronghold.
Don’t miss it.
