ROPING LIONS IN THE GRAND CANYON by ZANE GREY

1001 Outdoor Adventure Stories

Before Zane Grey became forever associated with the great Western novel, he was an outdoorsman, fisherman, hunter, traveler and passionate advocate for America's wild places.

And Roping Lions in the Grand Canyon is the real thing.

Grey tells us plainly that this is the account of his actual experiences with legendary outdoorsman Buffalo Jones in the Grand Canyon country. Some of these adventures later found their way into his fictional The Young Lion Hunter, but Grey emphasized the difference: that book was fiction, while this was the true story. Grey joins Jones and his companions on an extraordinary expedition into remote canyon country in pursuit of mountain lions. But the object wasn't simply to shoot the animals. The men tracked them with dogs, treed them and attempted the astonishing feat of capturing lions alive with ropes. What follows reads like one of Grey's adventure novels, except Grey was actually there.

There was another reason Grey wanted young people to read this story. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, and this adventure appeared in Boys' Life beginning in November 1923. Grey wrote directly to the Scouts about his hope that the story would inspire boys toward a greater love and appreciation of the outdoors. He encouraged hiking, camping, horsemanship, studying wildlife and learning the lessons nature could teach. He even urged young outdoorsmen to seek wild animals with a greater desire to study them than to kill them. [gutenberg.net.au], [fadedpage.com]

That philosophy is an important part of the Zane Grey we're celebrating here at 1001 Outdoor Adventure Stories. The world-famous Western writer was also an extraordinarily enthusiastic fisherman and outdoorsman who believed America's wild country was something worth experiencing and preserving. In Chapters 1 and 2, we're heading into that country with Grey himself, following an adventure filled with horses, hounds, rough trails, towering canyon walls, mountain lions and the men who were willing to follow them into some of the wildest terrain in America.

And we're just getting started.

Chapters 3 and 4 of ROPING LIONS IN THE GRAND CANYON will be coming in just a few days, right here at 1001 Outdoor Adventure Stories.

So saddle up, pack your gear, and join Zane Grey for an outdoor adventure that really happened.
