Chapters 5 & 6

1001 Stories For The Road
In Chapters 5 and 6 of Anne of Green Gables, we begin to understand the difficult childhood behind Anne Shirley's extraordinary imagination.
Chapter 5: Anne's History
As Marilla takes Anne back toward Mrs. Spencer, she asks Anne to tell her about her past.
Anne's parents, Walter and Bertha Shirley, were schoolteachers who died of fever when Anne was still a baby. From there Anne was passed from one household to another, often helping to care for other children. Eventually she was sent to an orphanage. Despite receiving relatively little formal schooling, Anne developed a great love for reading. [sparknotes.com], [coursehero.com]
As Marilla listens, something begins to change. For the first time, she understands just how much hardship this remarkable eleven-year-old has already experienced, and the idea of keeping Anne at Green Gables begins to take hold. [sparknotes.com]
Chapter 6: Marilla Makes Up Her Mind
At Mrs. Spencer's, there appears to be a simple solution to the mistake. Another woman, Mrs. Peter Blewett, is looking for a girl to help with her children.
But Marilla knows of Mrs. Blewett's harsh reputation and becomes increasingly uncomfortable with the idea of leaving Anne with her.
So Marilla brings Anne back to Green Gables.
And there, Marilla finally makes her decision.
Anne can stay. [sparknotes.com]
Matthew is delighted, and the accidental arrival of one imaginative little orphan is about to change life at Green Gables forever.
