THE CHAMPAWAT MAN-EATER (PT. 1) – JIM CORBETT

When a tiger turns man-eater, the hunter is no longer simply tracking an animal. He is entering into a deadly contest against a predator that has learned to hunt human beings.

In Part One of Jim Corbett's legendary account "The Champawat Man-Eater," Corbett enters a countryside living under the shadow of a tiger whose presence has changed the rhythms of everyday life. Villagers know that somewhere beyond the safety of their homes and settlements, the man-eater may be waiting.

Corbett begins the painstaking work of finding her. A goat is used in hopes of drawing the tiger within reach, but the hunt proves far more difficult than simply setting bait and waiting.

The trail eventually brings Corbett to the disturbing scene where the tiger had pulled a woman from a tree. There, he searches carefully for tracks and signs that might tell him where the animal has gone and, more importantly, where he might find her again.

And that's where we leave him.

Next Sunday: THE CHAMPAWAT MAN-EATER – PART TWO, as Jim Corbett continues the hunt for one of the most feared man-eating tigers in history.
